Photo of the day No. 9 - NP 360 Cable Car in Hong Kong

A white knuckle ride in foggy windy weather! Amazing!

Riding a cable car in this weather is not everyone’s cup of tea!

The white knuckle ride on the NP 360 Cable Car on Lantau Island is something extraordinary although I am sure a lot of people would disagree.

There are probably millions of images on social media of the cable car on a glorious sunny day or a cloudy but clear day but I imagine not too many of the foggy windy day experience and what an experience, it is quite disconcerting and eerie as you have no landmarks, no perception of how high you are and you are rocking in the cabin…. wow, I personally think it is a wonderful thing to do but I appreciate that people will be disappointed as they are expecting to see some rather dramatic views and trust me, there are lots of them.

The NP 360 Cable Car has been running now for almost 19 years and I never ever get tired of going on the cable car which I have done many, many times.

The experience is not just the cable car, it connects Tung Chung town which is near our airport to the Big Buddha and the Po Lin Monastery at Ngong Ping on Lantau Island, it runs through the hills and peaks for 5.7km and the actual ride can take about 25 minutes give or take.

I should point out that it is a very popular attraction roughly 1.56 Million people rode the cable car in 2024 which translates into lines, long lines…. depending on the weather and day of the week you can easily wait for 1 - 2 hours, as you can imagine weekends and public holidays are also very busy as a lot of Hong Konger’s like to go on the cable car and not just tourists. Please bear this in mind, also they have quite a few lines depending on what ticket you purchased and it can get very confusing.

It is for the most part a very professional and well run organisation and is owned and operated by the MTR Corp. which is Hong Kong’s subway company, they know to run things efficiently but they have exactly the same problem as the Peak Tram in Hong Kong, each cabin can only seat up to 10 people and just boarding them is a hassle ( unless you book a private cabin at a really outrageous cost ) but all of that is forgotten when you board it and start moving!

Please note that unless you are a party of 8 or 10 people you will be sharing a cabin with people you do not know.

My advice to visitors who want to do this experience on their own…. you really only need to do it one way and not two ways, the cable car tickets are NOT CHEAP in fact they are downright expensive, I have only once done it two ways, the rest of the time I go to Ngong Ping by bus or taxi both of which are cheaper and faster than the NP 360 Cable Car (particularly if there are long lines) and then come down on the Cable Car, the view is the same both ways!

You should also plan, if you are going one way and going up to he Buddha by taxi or bus, to get to Tung Chung by 9am, plenty of buses and taxis at this time, the Big Buddha opens at 10am, by going early you will avoid the queues coming back down and try and avoid using the cable car on a weekend or public holiday.

You should spend time on the NP 360 Cable Car website for 2 reasons

  • to make sure the cable car is in operation on the day you want to go, the cable car has regular “down time” periods from a few days to a few weeks so please check in advance

  • the NP 360 is always offering deals and packages which could save you money but not queuing time!

In addition a simple Google search will throw up hundreds of articles and such with regards to the cable car, this will help you familiarise you with what is in store… no one likes surprises!

Finally, please read the Tripadvisor reviews, see link below, they confirm many of the points I have mentioned.
