The Amazing Tai Fishing Village on Lantau Island, Hong Kong

I used my photoshop filters to enhance this image and I have been told it looks awesome but it is not really reality, it was a sunny day and the colors were vibrant but not quite as vibrant as the image suggests but this does not detract from the experience of visiting the Tai O Fishing Village which is home to approximately 2,000+ mainly elderly folk on Lantau Island, the largest of Hong Kong’s 263 Islands.
I have written quite a few blog posts about my distaste for the cliches HIDDEN GEMS and SECRET SPOTS because quite simply in this social media age, nothing in Hong Kong meets the meaning of those two cliches, Instagram, Faceebook and Tok Tok are awash with images and videos of the Tai O Fishing Village on Lantau Island.
The The Tai O Fishing Village is one of those sleepy places that is now becoming overrun with tourists but do not let that stop you, I have always been fascinated with Tai O and on a private tour you get to see a lot more stuff than if you are on one of those large group tours.
Contrary to popular belief Stilt Houses are NOT unique to Tai O, there are quite a few places that have still have them (Like Lamma Island) in Hong Kong, however it is really something to see these houses both by boat and walking and a visit to the Tai O Heritage Hotel is a must (see link below) as it will allow you to see on the way back to the Village Centre, the shrimp paste operation, one of the few remaining places in Hong Kong that make this iconic condiment as it were., personally I hate the stuff, I have no doubt that if applied to a steel surface it would melt the steel! and the smell would render a donkey unconscious!
I first started visiting Lantau Island with guests in 2011 and have been many times since then and I can tell you now it has exploded in popularity, the tour that is most popular is the one that covers the NP 360 Cable Car, The Big Buddha, The Po Lin Monastery and the Tai O Fishing Village and it is a 7 or 8 hour experience and it shows another side to Hong Kong that most visitors do not see.
For some reason the moniker”Venice of the East” has been applied to Tai O, I would not take that seriously, I have been to Venice and there is no comparison but Tai O is a fascinating place and a real contrast to the Hong Kong that most people see.
The NP 360 website (see link below) offers a partnership tour to the Tai O Fishing Village Village, which you may well consider but you will be doing the tour with a very large group of people.
As mentioned above I absolutely believe that one of the best things you can do in Hong Kong is visit Lantau Island do a tour that covers the NP 360 Cable Car, The Big Buddha, The Po Lin Monastery and the Tai O Fishing Village, it requires a lot of travel time and you need to do a private tour and not one of the many tours that you can book on Tripadvisor, Viator and Klook that can have from anywhere from 10 - 99 people on the tour which by the way is a horrible experience.
