Another 28 of my Favourite Hong Kong Car Images

The amazing Hong Kong luxury car culture

I have taken a lot of car images in the past 10 years 2014 - 2024, the miracle of having a world class professional digital camera at my fingertips and I am at over 101,000 quality car images

As you probably know my primary interest is car vanity plates but I have been a car fanatic since I was 11 years old, our first car in Hong Kong was an old classic Jaguar and that started the ball rolling., the image below is what we had in 1972 and I often wonder if this is the exact car we had, it is the same colour!

Jaguar - SE 955

It is very hard to put a figure on the exact number of cars here in Hong Kong, in mid 2024 it is somewhere between 650,000 - 700,000 and I am really blessed that Hong Kong is obsessed with brands and quality, the best selling brand is Toyota closely followed by Mercedes Benz although it saddens me that Hong Konger’s have a thing for Tesla, I do not like Electric cars, for car fanatics like myself the roar | rumble | cackle of a V 6 | V 8 | V 10 | V 12 | V 16 engine and | or a twin turbo cannot be beat and do not get me started on the styling of a Tesla - each to their own I guess.

We have any number of car photographers in Hong Kong (a special mention to Daryl Chapman, a real professional) and everyone has their own style, for me personally I researched the most likely places for seeing awesome cars and have stuck with them, I like to get up close and personal to the cars, I am not a fan of shooting from bridges or from a distance, but that is just me, oh and I avoid places favoured by the hordes of kids with camera’s all shooting from the same spot on a Sunday, it feels very contrived, for me, it is the joy of seeing an amazing car 4 hours into a photo session.. but hey, it is great that young people still love cars and still love to photograph them for Instagram and other social media platforms.

If you want to check out how a another proper professional photographer works his magic then go to Graham Uden’s site - Graham is one of the best in Hong Kong and I cannot ever hope to be at his level but in my defence, I think my car images look more natural, most of the time I have just a few seconds to take the shot, I certainly have no time to spend 20 minutes prepping the car for a shot.

Of course these two professionals have much better and much more expensive equipment than I have!

… and my advice to these young photographers, don’t just go to the same spots at 9am on a Sunday, a lot of Hong Konger’s drive their amazing cars to work or take them out on a sunny afternoon midweek, frequency and length of time taking pictures is absolutely crucial, virtually all of my favourite shots where NOT taken on a Sunday!

Volume 3, another 28 images starts now and as usual the order is totally random and I am not one to state model designations (most of the time!) and engine specifications - the brand and the beauty of the car is enough for me and these are my own personal favourites.

Enjoy.
