The Lugard Road Lookout at Victoria Peak, Hong Kong

The amazing panoramic city view at the Lugard Road Lookout at Victoria Peak in Hong Kong - and in my opinion, quite simply the greatest city view in the world!

If I had to choose one image to define Hong Kong it would be this one, as shown above and yes, I took it.

This is the simply breath taking view of Hong Kong from Victoria Peak, it is quite rare to get an amazing panoramic city view anywhere in the world but for me this one gets the first prize by miles….

My friends and fellow private tour guides are often amused by my passion for going to this spot and naturally they named it Jamie’s spot at the Peak, I have been taking guests there since 2011 and I have actually been to Victoria Peak over 6,000 times since 1972, I first saw this view on January 2nd 1972 as a kid, the day after we arrived in Hong Kong and like most Hong Kong residents a great day out is to do the Peak Circular Walk which takes in the Lugard Road Lookout.

My best estimate is that between 7 million to 10 million people visit Victoria Peak every year, this takes into account people who use the Peak Tram, Buses, Coaches, Taxis and private vehicles and it really saddens me that the overwhelming number of people who visit the Peak end up on top of the Peak Tower 428 Sky Terrace which is the worst sort of tourist trap with a view that is not even close to the view you see from the Luagrd Road Lookout.

I have written many blog posts about Victoria Peak and my best one is “the 16 myths about Victoria Peak” please click on the link below

In a nutshell, Victoria Peak itself has over 36,000 Tripadvisor reviews, the Peak Tower Sky Terrace has 998 reviews yet the Lugard Road Lookout has only 9 reviews and that spot has been around for well over a hundred years!

I am loathe to use cliches but the Lugard Road Lookout is not a hidden gem or secret spot it is well known to any Hong Kong resident and enlightened private tour guides but for the general public and tourists, they pretty much end up on the Peak Tower 428 Sky Terrace and are charge US$10 for the view and yes most tour guides in Hong Kong are more than happy to avoid going to the Lugard Road Lookout for reasons that include timing and laziness!

If you click on the menu link of this site “Victoria Peak HK” there are links to all of my blog posts regarding Victoria Peak which includes my how to guide to get to the Lugard Road Lookout.
