“Commissioned by the Hong Kong Jubilee Committee to mark the fiftieth anniversary in 1887 of Queen Victoria’s accession, the statue was funded by public subscription and designed by the Italian sculptor Mario Raggi (1879-1907), who lived and worked in London.”
This statue of Queen Victoria was erected in Hong Kong on 28 May 1896 in what is now the middle of Chater Road in Central which is the Hong Kong Business District, at the time in 1896 the site was known as Royal Square and is now known as Statue Square
The statue itself was apparently completed in 1890 but was not “erected” until 1896 to allow for reclamation work to be completed on the site in Hong Kong.
When it was placed in the square the statue was installed under a sixty-foot-high architectural canopy made of Portland stone and I have to say it was quite imposing and there was a dispute about whether the statue was to be cast in bronze or made of marble, eventually bronze won that contest although apparently a marble version, somewhat smaller was made and shipped to Hong Kong and ended up on display in the residence of a prominent resident of Hong Kong.
The Queen Victoria Statue is no longer in Statue Square, during the Japanese Occupation of Hong Kong (1941 - 1945) the statue was uprooted (in 1942) and sent by ship to Japan where it was to be melted down, this never happened and the statue made its way back to Hong Kong some years after the end of the war and rather than ending up back in Statue Square it was placed in Victoria Park in Causeway Bay in Hong Kong, where it sits exposed to the elements to this day.
Personally I think it is a rather odd location to display the statue, it is not easy to spot as Victoria Park is quite large but for those people interested in history it is worth the trek, getting to Victoria Park is pretty easy, finding the statue is a little harder.
