Photo of the day No. 11 - Car Licence Plates in Hong Kong

A Nissan car with a HK$11,400,000 or US$1,461,540 Plate

Yes this is a moderately priced Nissan car which I took a photo of in 2018 outside the Hong Kong Country Club, whilst a lot of Hong Kong Chinese love to purchase expensive cars (we have over 4,000 Ferrari’s and 1,000+ Rolls Royce’s in Hong Kong) we have a lot more rich folk who do not like to advertise their wealth and are very low key.

… and yes you are reading the caption correctly, on 16th February 2025 the licence plate sold at our annual Chinese New Year Auction for HK$11,400,000 or US$1,461,540.

There is a story behind this and it is quite likely that this very expensive licence plate will reappear on the streets of Hong Kong on a more appropriate car in the not too distant future.

In a nutshell, the plate 88 on the Nissan was allocated to a citizen after 1921, the Government did not hold auctions to sell licence plates until 1973 so no money changed hands although it is quite likely that the plate ended up on a car belonging to a wealthy family with influence.

88 is considered a very lucky number in Hong Kong Chinese Culture, 8 means wealth so 88 means you are inline to make an absolutely bloody fortune!

In 1973 the rules changed and now licence plates are sold at auctions which are held on average twice a month

The most sought after licence plates are

  • numbers only from 2 - 9,999

  • single letters ie W V D S etc

  • any letter and number combination - HK + up to 4 numbers

  • any letter and number combination - XX + up to 4 numbers

  • any letter and number combination - AA + up to 4 numbers

Basically any licence plate you have is yours until you pass on, scrap the car (and forget to reallocate the plate) unless you have purchased the plate under a company which means you can transfer the plate.

This suggests that the owner of the plate 88 and said Nissan Car gave the licence plate back to the Hong Kong Government sometime between 2018 and 2024 and the Government put it up for auction.

I have double checked with the Transport Department and they confirm that this is the first time this licence plate has been put up for Auction and sold so no doubt the beneficiary (the Lotteries fund which helps Charities) is rightly elated at the result.

This is the list of the most expensive licence plates in Hong Kong that I compiled by trawling though an awful lot of Government Auction Documents going back to 1973, some of the prices paid are just mind boggling! This is a completely accurate and up to date list.
